When the LEARNS Act created the Educational Freedom Account (EFA) program to provide families with funding to meet educational needs, it was designed to grow this year with both new students who could qualify beginning in 2024 and new uses for the funds. If you or someone you know is interested in learning more, please attend this zoom meeting. At 7 pm on Tuesday, Jan. 23, The Reform Alliance is hosting an online webinar with Darrell Smith, head of the EFA program at the Department of Education, to discuss those changes and share information prior to new enrollment later this year. Free registration is available here: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/6817043119891/WN_sohoCTT3RliEISIvzx_zRg#/registration

OUTDOOR ADVENTURE STUDENTS this morning helped Br. Adrian Strobel (Class of '62) shell the pecans that they harvested with him months ago. These pecans will be shared with the kitchen staff to create delicious recipes for our students and monks. The boys are hoping for pecan pie! Our outdoor adventure program is headed up by Mr. Nick McDaniel, and the boys enjoy many unique educational experiences under his leadership and guidance.

WELCOME TO THE SERIES "TROJANS WHO INSPIRE US": Our current and former students contribute back to society in various meaningful ways. We appreciate their inspiring efforts that go beyond the ordinary, and honor them for embracing the path that God laid before them with a willing heart. The first person we honor in this series is an alumnus who celebrated his 100th birthday recently on December 27, 2023. Meet Dr. James Post, Subiaco Academy graduate of the Class of 1942. Born in 1923 in Altus, Arkansas, into a family of grape farmers, Dr. Post was raised during the "Roaring 20's" and the Great Depression, the fourth of nine children. He served in the United States Navy during World War II, and went on to become a well-respected pediatrician in Fort Smith, Arkansas for more than 40 years. In that time, he notably introduced the oral polio vaccine to Sebastian County and surrounding areas, playing a key role in the mass immunization efforts across Arkansas in 1963 as the chairman of the Sebastian County polio campaign. Dr. Post grew up being very familiar with the Abbey and Academy all his life, as his father and many other relatives attended Subiaco, and it was a tradition and privilege for him also to be able to attend. Beginning his studies at Subiaco in 1938, Dr. Post stayed for four years. Following his high school graduation, he pursued an accelerated program at Yale Medical School, earning his medical degree in 1948 at the remarkable age of 24. Over his long medical career, Dr. Post diagnosed, treated, and cured numerous Fort Smith residents, becoming a beloved physician and earning fond recollections like "Dr. Post was my childhood doctor!" While at Subiaco, Dr. Post was involved in many sports, and earned the distinction of Salutatorian for his class. He says that the people who had the most influence on him while at Subiaco were Fr. Clement and Fr. Raymond. Great memories of his time at the school still linger even after 82 years since graduating. When asked what was one of his best memories of being a student at Subiaco, he smiled and said that making lasting friendships is what he remembers the most. With a grin, he added, "I loved to go fishing on Thursday afternoons at the creek with my classmate Jack Borengasser." Looking back, Dr. Post said, "The influence of the monks and their strong Catholic faith has stayed with me my whole life." The seeds that were planted in him at Subiaco influenced his faith journey, and caused him to choose his path and vocation in life. Dr. Post would say that his greatest blessing in life was meeting and marrying his wife, Pat. They were married for 73 years, and raised eight children together. In closing, when asked, "If you could tell current Subiaco students one thing, what would that be?" He answered, "You are attending one of the best high schools in the nation. Take advantage of it." Wise words from someone who has been around for 100 years and still feels at home at Subiaco Academy. Thank you, Dr. James Post, and Happy 100th Birthday from all of us at Subiaco! God bless you.
