Prayer of Contrition

Academy

The Rule of St. Benedict, which we monks have faithfully lived for over 1,500 years, commends to us that our primary work is PRAYER. While we cannot undo the pain and trauma perpetrated upon the innocent victims who suffered from the actions of some of our brother monks, we can work to ensure that the structures are provided so that the abuse does not happen again. To that end, we pray daily for the victims of abuse that our actions will now bring some solace for the failures of our brothers in the past. We also pray this prayer communally as a monastic community each Friday Night after Vespers.

Good and Gracious God,

Through the intercession of Saint Benedict, hear the humble prayer of your sons as we implore your mercy for the wrong that has been committed and the harm that has been done by our brother monks.

Bring healing to all who have suffered abuse and restore them to fullness of life.

Grant the spirit of repentance and penitence to all who have broken sacred trust and abused your beloved children.

Reconcile us to one another and never allow us to be parted from you.

We ask this through our Lord, Jesus Christ, your son, who has freed us from sin and death, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
