In the last match of the regular season, the Trojans hosted the Pottsville Apaches. In Singles, Conner Gosalvez lost in a tie-breaker 6-8. In Doubles, Maaz Sohail and Andrew Chen won their match 7-5 and Ryan Hsu and Erik McNicoll lost their match 3-6. David Villarreal, an up and coming tennis player, won his Singles match 8-4. The Trojans played extremely hard this season and they eagerly anticipate the District Tournament next Tuesday in Clarksville.
The Trojan golf team (AJ Smith, Ethan Martinez, Will Jamison, Connor Phillips) on September 18 was able to finish tied for 5th out of 8 conference teams. Not bad for having 3 players that had never played a competitive round of golf until this season, 2 of which had never played a complete round at all! AJ Smith earned a trip to the 4A state tournament The 4A state tournament will be held at Sage Meadows in Jonesboro on 10-3
Tuesday, September 18, the Trojan Cross Country team raced in Clarksville at the University of the Ozarks Invitational. Over 500 athletes participated. Of the 23 senior high teams, Subiaco placed 5th. Max Linares earned a medal, running a 19:04 5k, particularly impressive considering the heat index of 103. He was followed closely by Tim Constantino. The entire senior high had excellent races, particularly considering the difficulty of the course and the heat. The junior high team was led by Joshua Bowman and John Ho. After the meet, the team went to Fat Dawgz BBQ to eat smoked, pulled pork sandwiches; homemade chips; and monstrous cinnamon rolls topped with ice cream. A special thanks to Amy Oatis for organizing the meal! It was a great day for Subiaco Cross Country!
It was a busy week for the Mighty Trojans. On September 11th, the Trojans traveled to Dardanelle to face off against the Dardanelle Sand Lizards. In Singles, both Ethan Yost and Conner Gosalvez won their matches 6-4 and 6-1. In Doubles, Daniel Haurnet and Ryan Hsu lost their match 3-6, and Maaz Sohail and Andrew Chen won their match 6-3. On September 13th, the Trojans hosted the Clarksville Panthers. In Singles, Ethan Yost lost his match 6-8, Conner Gosalvez won his match 8-5, and Erik McNicoll won his match 6-3. In Doubles, both Daniel Haurnet and Ryan Hsu, as well as Maaz Sohail and Andrew Chen, lost their matches 2-8.
In the 48-20 loss to Lincoln, the aerial game provided the highlights, i.e., 2 touchdowns on passes from Luke Hertlein, one to Gage Lee and one to Thomas Bourgeois. 155 grandparents from Arkansas, Louisiana, Florida, Oklahoma, Texas, New Jersey, Kentucky, and North Carolina enjoyed visiting, touring, lunching with their grandsons, meeting teachers, and hearing a music performance during the September 10 Grandparents’ Day at Subiaco.
Hoping to continue winning ways after a successful outing in week one in the 20-12 victory over Lavaca, the Trojans had some success in the aerial game, as Luke Herlein passed for 148 yards and one touchdown, a 43-yard scoring strike to Gage Lee. Jordan Rainwater accounted for the other score, a rushing touchdown. Defensively, Haeven Patterson (#60 tackling) and Thomas Bourgeois led the way, both having numerous tackles. Subiaco was unable to come back after a large first half Lamar lead. Final—Lamar 34, Subiaco 12.
The Subiaco Cross Country team raced in the Fort Smith Invitational on Saturday. The Junior High team placed third, led by George Urlakis, Joshua Bowman, John Ho, Vince Dang, and Daniel Wu. The Senior High team placed second and was led by Max Linares, Jacob Bristol, Aidan Everett, Matthew Whittle, and Zach Venable.
The Trojans hosted the Heber Springs Panthers on September 4. Ethan Yost and Conner Gosalvez dominated in Singles, winning their matches 8-1 and 8-0. In Doubles, both Daniel Haunert and Ryan Hsu, as well as Maaz Sohail and Andrew Chen, lost their matches 4-8.
The young Trojans traveled to Lamar to open the season. Two brothers from Texas led the way, both on offense and on defense. Michael Miller had 10 tackles to lead the defensive effort. Drew Miller rushed for 77 yards. Both brothers scored touchdowns. RJ Malik rushed for 76 yards and had 74 yards on kickoff returns.
The Mighty Trojans traveled to Morrilton on August 28th to compete against the Devil Dogs. The Devil Dogs were panting from fierce competition in both Singles and Doubles. In Singles, Ethan Yost and Conner Gosalvez won both their matches 8-2 and 6-0. In Doubles, Daniel Haunert and Andrew Chen lost 7-9 in a nail-biting tiebreaker. Maaz Sohail and Erik McNicoll had the Devil Dogs on the run, winning their match 8-1. Dardanelle/Mena On August 30th, the Mighty Trojans hosted their first home game. Teams from both Dardanelle and Mena came to the Subiaco. In Singles, Ethan Yost lost his match 7-9 in a grueling tiebreaker and Conner Gosalvez won his match 8-1. In Doubles, Daniel Haunert and Andrew Chen lost their match 7-9 in a tiebreaker, and Maaz Sohail and Erik McNicoll lost their match 5-8.
