Class of 1958
George S. Lensing, Jr., was born in Vicksburg, Mississippi, on March 20, 1940, the oldest son of George S. Lensing, Sr. ’31 and Opal Lensing. Following his elementary school education at St. Patrick’s in Lake Providence, Louisiana, and his secondary education at Subiaco Academy, he entered the University of Notre Dame and in 1962, received his baccalaureate degree in Arts with a major in English. Immediately following, George accepted an offer to attend Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, completing his Ph.D. in English in 1966.
From 1966-1968 George entered the Peace Corps as a Visiting Professor within the English Department at the Universidade Federal do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, Niteroi, Brazil. After his tenure in Brazil, he accepted a position as an Assistant Professor of English at the University of North Carolina. For 47 years he diligently worked there until his retirement in January 2016. Over the years, he held the position of Professor, Dean of Honors in the College of Arts and Sciences, Secretary of Faculty, and enjoyed the annual opportunity to speak to the Tarheel basketball team. He is a published author of three books:
Four Poets and the Emotive Imagination,
Wallace Stevens: A Poet's Growth, and
Wallace Stevens and the Seasons, as well as numerous publications and essays interpreting the works of many noted authors.
George is the recipient of many distinguished awards and service commendations including the prestigious Thomas Jefferson Award. He has delivered presentations at many universities and conferences in the United States and abroad. George has been a member of the University of North Carolina Newman Student Center Parish serving on various boards and assisting in development efforts since arriving at Chapel Hill.
Subiaco has always held a special place in George’s heart. His uncle, Abbot Michael, was the fourth abbot of Subiaco. His father, George Lensing, Sr. ’31, two brothers, Mike Lensing ’59 and David Lensing ’64, along with several uncles, nephews, and cousins are all graduates of Subiaco Academy. In 2013 he was the Commencement Speaker for the Academy’s graduating class.
